Notes, Tips & Tricks: Red Hat 5.5

This is a very basic description on installing Red hat 5.5 Enterprise Linux. There are a few notes that need to be shared:

Subscription / Installation Number

During the installation booting and starting the installation you are requested to fill in the installation number (subscription number). To find it do the following:

  • Login to your Customer Portal page at https://access.redhat.com
  • Choose the 'Manage your Subscriptions' tab.
  • You will see your installation number (subscription number) in the seventh column beside the corresponding subscription.

Make sure you list your subscription details in your password database.

Recreate LVM Volume

As a user you can issue the command “system-config-lvm” which will start a graphical overview of LVM with the option to delete and create a LVM volume. It's not possible to recreate a LVM volume.

Afterwards you can check the settings and configuration of the LVM volume with the “dumpe2fs” command (as root):

[root@redhat ~]# dumpe2fs -h /dev/mapper/ApplVG-DatabaseLV
