Upgrade steps

You can upgrade directly to Tivoli Storage Manager Version 5.5 from any previous version of Tivoli Storage Manager. If upgrading to Tivoli Storage Manager from any previous release, you should take actions to clean up system objects.

  1. Consider whether you need to install any operating system patches or a new operating system level before installing the latest Tivoli Storage Manager server.
  2. Back up critical server information by using the BACKUP DB, BACKUP DEVCONFIG, and BACKUP VOLHIST commands. For example, the following commands back up device configuration information to files that you have identified in the dsmserv.opt file, with the DEVCONFIG option. You can instead specify file names with this command.
    1. Perform a full database backup. See the Administrator's Guide for details. Also save a copy of the volume history and device configuration files. For additional information, see the BACKUP VOLHISTORY and BACKUP DEVCONFIG commands in the Administrator's Reference.
      backup db type=full devclass=tape_device

This command creates a full backup of the database to a tape defines as scratch volume.

    2. BACKUP DEVCONFIG
      backup devconfig

      Command Info
Afterwards copy the following file to a safe location:
      C:\Program Files\Tivoli\tsm\server1\devcnfg.out

    3. BACKUP VOLHIST
      backup volhist

      Command Info
Afterwards copy the following file to a safe location:
      C:\Program Files\Tivoli\tsm\server1\volhist.out

    4. EXTEND DB
Add about 25% additional database space. New levels of Tivoli Storage Manager incorporate support for various new functions, which will require additional database space. After the upgrade, when the database space has stabilized, you may be able to reduce the amount of space allocated to the database.
      Extend Database Size Info
  3. Save the following important files, which are in the default directory for the Tivoli Storage Manager server:
    1. volhist (file name depends on what is specified in the server options file)
    2. devconfig (file name depends on what is specified in the server options file)
    3. dsmserv.opt
    4. dsmserv.dsk Issue the QUERY OPTION command to retrieve file names
  4. Ensure that no tapes are mounted. Use the QUERY MOUNT command.
  5. Ensure that no Tivoli Storage Manager processes are running. Use the QUERY PROCESS command. Cancel processes if needed, by using CANCEL PROCESS process-number. Installation stops if any Tivoli Storage Manager processes are running.
  6. Stop the server if it is running by entering:
    halt

    Command Info

  7. Write down the directory path of your current Tivoli Storage Manager server.
    C:\Program Files\Tivoli\tsm\server1
  8. Use the Windows® Add/Remove Programs dialog to uninstall the current Tivoli Storage Manager server.
  9. Verify that all Tivoli Storage Manager code is removed from the machine.
  10. Install the latest Tivoli Storage Manager server software (see Installing Tivoli Storage Manager).
  11. Verify that the installation was successful by starting the server.
